ROOTS

‘ROOTS’, by Whalebone and James Katsipis, is a series of photos and stories highlighting friends of Whalebone old and new.

We’re starting our photo series as far east as you can get in Montauk before you end up in the Atlantic. Joe Gaviola is Montauk’s very own lighthouse keeper and welcomed us into his uniquely special home atop Turtle Hill, at the base of the lighthouse. We lucked out with some beautiful afternoon light accompanied by endless stories of past history, as well as future plans for the National Landmark. Joe has recently picked up surfing and you can follow him along on his journey to surf in front of his house for the first time ever, later this summer. While he’s waiting for the water to warm up a little more, he will be hosting the 3rd annual ‘Beacon of Hope’ on 6.15, a 5k run for cancer awareness on the east end. We can tell he’s prepared by the way he sprints up and down that long driveway.
